Having Been Born                       (1 Nephi 1:1-15)

Just like Nephi, we were born to parents to live on this earth. Nephi mentions he was born of goodly parents, parents who loved the Lord and taught him about the commandments of God. I love this section because it reminds me that we can be doing everything as parents to teach our children the commandments, but because of agency our children have a choice on whether or not to live the commandments of God. We hope and pray they will turn out like mighty Nephi.

We learn about Lehi and how he received revelation from God about the city of Jerusalem, he was told to preach repentance or the city would be destroyed. This is important for us to remember as parents and spouses. We too are entitled to receive inspiration, warnings and promptings to teach our families to protect themselves from destruction. As we heed the promptings we are blessed. Just like the city of Jerusalem our family members may reject those warnings, but we can have confidence in the relationship we have with the Lord as we diligently do what is asked of us. The more we listen and obey, the more the windows of heaven are open to us.

Some of those things we have been asked to do in our families to keep our homes from being destroyed are regular Family Home Evenings, family prayer, church attendance and personal/family scripture study. It doesn’t matter if we are a single, couple, family or empty nesters the promise is there of fortification from the adversary and his attacks if we do these things. Even if we stand alone in doing these things, we will be strengthened and fortified with an increase of strength and be better prepared to serve, assist and inspire others. We will be better equipped to withstand the fiery darts of the adversary.

Lehi received some incredible insight and directions as he was allowed to see God and the heavens filled with angels. He was filled with joy as he stated:

“O Lord God Almighty! Thy throne is high in the heavens, and thy power, and goodness, and mercy are over all the inhabitants of the earth; and, because thou art merciful, thou wilt not suffer those who come unto thee that they shall perish!”

We can also be filled with hope that as our loved ones come unto Christ, that God will not cause them to perish. There is so much hope in that statement, we learn that God is merciful and has given us such a beautiful gift in being able to repent.

I love how Lehi’s heart was filled to capacity. He was shown what would happen if Jerusalem chose not to repent, yet the Lord filled his whole heart as he was given instruction.

Perhaps your home isn’t where you want it to be and Satan is threatening to destroy all that is precious, but as we turn to God, he too can fill our hearts. Isn’t that amazing to think about, in the midst of our greatest challenges, he will fill our hearts and we can find joy and thanksgiving in knowing God is listening, he loves us and is very mindful.

Another way to look at these verses, is God has also sent us modern day prophets to testify and warn us of dangers. As we listen to and review the words from General Conference, then listen for the personal revelation found there in and apply it as directed by the spirit, we will have spiritual protection, fortification and be filled.

I really love that in the first verse in the entire Book of Mormon, Nephi talks about how he had dealt with many afflictions in his time here on earth. It’s a reminder that even the greatest of individuals will not escape without some kind of affliction. We have been sent to overcome, learn and grow. Affliction has the potential to be the best teacher if we are willing to humble ourselves and see the lessons.

So what I have personally gleaned is we have been sent here with prophets to guide us, God is merciful and gives us the opportunity to repent and will fill us with peace and happiness, even admid the greatest of conflicts as we turn to him.

In reading the verses below , what are some impressions that come to you? What are some areas you see you can personally work on?
